History of the location

The earliest mention of the "Lohmühle" was in 1446.

Over the years, many millers have found their place of residence and work at this location - on the Mühlbach. The mill itself was used as a grain mill, cutting mill, paper mill or tanning mill.

The mill burned down a number of times, was rebuilt or replaced by another building. In 1898, instead of the cumbersome water wheel, a turbine was installed to make better use of water power.

The Hotel-Restaurant "Lohmühle" was built on the foundations of the ruins of the last mill - a tannery! This happened in the old Franconian style and in 1979, opening was in 1980.

In the years that followed, the hotel was continually expanded and sold by the old owners in 1999. The Groh-Walter family has been running the hotel restaurant ever since. You can still view the old foundation walls or foundations in the staircase area at the exit of the restaurant.

What does "Lohmühle" mean?

A tanning mill is used to crush the vegetable tanning agents required for tanning. Above all, spruce and oak bark from tan forests are ground into tan. this contains a lot of tannic acid and is therefore suitable for tanning leather.

After the material to be ground has been crushed, it is ground in the actual mill. "Lohmühlen" are often found near former tanneries.

The picture on the left is a tanning spoon, ie a device for peeling off the bark.
